Recovering Data From Failed and Failing Drives

The single most important thing to know: stop using the drive. Every additional power-on of a mechanically failing disk risks turning a recoverable fault into an unrecoverable one, and every write to a drive with deleted files reduces the chance of getting them back. Power it down, leave it down, and let someone image it before anything else is attempted.
Logical Failure vs Physical Failure

Logical failures — deleted files, formatted volumes, corrupted partition tables, failed operating system upgrades — leave the hardware intact and are usually recoverable at reasonable cost. Physical failures — head crashes, seized motors, failed controller boards, worn NAND — need specialist handling.
SSD and NVMe Recovery Is Different
